June 8, 2012 - PRLog -- The sculptor, painter and filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle is on show at the Vicky David Gallery in New York City. Vicky David Gallery specializes in postwar European art with an emphasis on Nouveau Réalisme. Niki de Saint Phalle is a central figure in the French New Realism movement, recognized for her impressive colorful and captivating shaped works. Saint Phalle breaks the hierarchy between the arts. Saint Phalle’s works reflect her interest in different cultures as well as her fascination with primitive arts and legendary myths. On show at the Vicky David Gallery are some of Saint Phalle’s famous ″Nanas″ sculptures, brightly colored voluptuous women made of mesh, polyester and paper mache. Niki de Saint Phalle’s ″Nanas″ explore the ambiguity of the status of women and in the struggle for equal rights. The show’s highlights include L’ange vase, from 1993, and the mixed-media sculpture Le champignon magique, from 1989, which stands more than 9 feet tall. Le champignon magique was a collaboration between Niki and her husband, fellow key Nouveau Réalist Jean Tinguely. Composed of an interesting mix of materials, Saint Phalle has used polyester, mosaic mirror glass, acrylic paint, and various metal pieces from a motorbike, and animated by a working motor. Saint Phalle’s flamboyant sculptures take center stage through June 30. Learn more at http://www.vickydavid.com
