Are We (Back) There Yet Mum ?!

Combining education with entertainment is quite a skill. When kids are bored during the long school holidays, you can kill two birds with one stone by taking them somewhere informative and fun, such as a hands-on museum.

May 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Do you fancy a little time travel for this year’s family summer holiday?

We’re not talking hiring Dr Who for a package deal trip in the Tardis but there are plenty of other ways of escaping modern life.

Kids love history – preferably involving plenty of blood, gore, vomit and death – so why not incorporate a couple of themed days into your family break this year? Who knows, they might even get an extra house point or two when they go back to school.

Britain, with its rich history, offers an unrivalled choice of locations and activities for kids of any age. Forget stuffy museums, the days of dusty collections in damp buildings are long gone; displays these days are fully interactive and genuinely exciting.

If you really want to engage with history try visiting one of the many medieval reenactment fairs around the country and learn about archery or making bread over a fire. Stately homes such as Hampton Court Palace are also great fun.

When it comes to visiting landmarks The Tower of London takes some beating. There the younger members of the family will be entranced by stories of prisoners, escapes, executions, and Kings and Queens told by a real Beefeater.

Even granddad will enjoy a guided tour of the Tower taking in famous spots such as Traitors' Gate, the White Tower, and the Royal Chapel of St Peter Ad Vincula.

Then there’s the Jewel House where you will be dazzled by the 23,578 gems that make up the Crown Jewels, including the world’s most famous diamonds. A new display explores the importance of the Crown Jewels to the British Monarchy, the role of the Tower in protecting these treasures and the long and fascinating tradition of coronations in England.

If you really want to get a feel for time travel consider taking your school holidays in Suffolk and visit the Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo.

Here the kids will enjoy getting dirty as they explore the acres of space as part of their “study” of early British kingdoms.

They can walk around the ancient burial mounds and discover the incredible story of the burial of a king with his treasured possessions. Then they will come face to face with their ancestors and explore an award-winning exhibition, the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince’s sword.

In 1939 archaeologists discovered the treasurers from 1,300 years ago. Inside a grassy mound they found the ship burial.  The wooden ship had rotted away, but its outline, and some of the treasures buried with it remained. Among the gold, silver and iron was a sword, a shield and a stunning warrior's helmet, probably the most famous of all Anglo-Saxon museum treasures.

The Sutton Hoo site also includes an Edwardian house and beautiful estate walks – something for all the family.
