Schools Out - Don't Worry, Help is At Hand !

Summer holidays are great when they begin, but it's difficult to keep the excitement up for 6 whole weeks. If you’re staying in the UK it pays to have a plan and this handy article outlines some of the activities on offer in Suffolk this summer.

May 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Every parent, and quite a few grandparents, knows the problem; the kids have six weeks off school and they have to be amused.

When you were young the thought of so long off school was exciting but now you’re the Chief Organiser the novelty has almost certainly worn off. After the first week the cries of “I’m bored” get a little hard to bear. If the weather is good or you have an unlimited budget the problem is eased but for most people life isn’t like that so you need a range of plans to keep the little darlings busy.

For boys and girls from the age of three onwards working in the kitchen is a great way to keep them amused if they can’t play outside. Decorating gingerbread men with licing and bought decorations is always a winner; why not stage a “puppet” show with the creations afterwards and award a prize for the best idea? The prize can be simple – how about winning the right to choose the dvd everyone watches during the afternoon? That saves arguments and doesn’t cost anything.

Cakes and buns offer more decorating options and making pizzas can also be fun. Coming up with different sandwich fillings for tea time is good too, provided you don’t have to be Chief Taster!

If the weather isn’t too bad flying a kite will keep everyone happy. If you don’t have one why not try making a kite? There are plenty of ideas on the internet. Paper planes are fun too unless you have a collection of Ming vases, in which case this is defiantly an outside activity.

If your budget runs to a break away from home consider a school holiday in Suffolk.

Suffolk has some outstanding Blue Flag beaches such as in Southwold where the kids can play in the sand to their hearts’ content – while mum and dad might be tempted to visit some of the boutiques which line the high street.  And everyone is sure to enjoy some fish and chips or ice cream after a lovely day in the sunshine.

For other nature pursuits, pay a visit to RSPB Minsmere, one of the society’s most famous nature reserves.  You’ll be able to see avocets, bitterns, teals and black tailed godwits on the nature trails through heath, woodland and sand dunes.

If you’re trying to inject a bit of culture into your children’s lives, take them to archaeological site Sutton Hoo in Woodbridge.  This 245 acre estate is the site of a 90 ft ship-burial of an Anglo Saxon king, which has been called the first page of English history. Visitors can enjoy Anglo Saxon themed events, open air theatre and children’s trails. Like RSPB Minsmere, you can do some serious bird watching at Sutton Hoo, too.

School holidays in Suffolk offer plenty of other options.  Why not find a castle and explore it for the day? Castles are magical places and capture the imagination of most boys and girls, who love crossing moats, running up and down spiral staircases and looking at cannons.

Museums used to mean boredom but these days most make a huge effort to attract kids and admission is often free. With a little bit of homework before the holidays you’ll be able to match the subjects the youngsters will be studying at school when they go back in September. Whether they will be studying the Romans, Normans or even the Black Death, you’ll be surprised at how much they can learn in a museum and it is fun. There may even be an extra house point or two from teacher when they go back!
