123Dentist.com Members Lead the Way with Free Oral Cancer Screening Day

April 30, 2012 - PRLog -- Vancouver, BC.  123Dentist.com dental clinics across the Lower Mainland offered Free Oral Cancer screenings on April 26, 2012 to raise awareness of Oral Cancer and to help celebrate Oral Health Month this April.

“123Dentist.com dental clinics strive to have a positive impact on the lives of our families, friends and the community,” says Dr. Amin Shivji. “We felt it important to undertake an initiative to inform Lower Mainland residents about the risks of Oral Cancer.  Our Free Oral Cancer Screening Day on April 26, 2012 was meant to raise awareness for the need to get screened regularly, and to let people know that screening can be done quickly and easily at local dentists that use the VELscope® system.”

The VELscope® system, developed by researchers at the BC Cancer Agency and commercialized by Burnaby’s LED Dental Inc., works by using fluorescent light technology to help detect signs of cancer and precancer that are not visible to the naked eye.  A VELscope® screening is a painless 5 minute test that allows dentists to detect Oral Cancer at its earliest stages - and as with other cancers, early detection and early treatment are key factors in achieving treatment success.

As part of the Free Oral Cancer Screening Day, 123Dentist.com dental clinics collected donations from those receiving screening on April 26, 2012.  These donations were matched by 123Dentist.com and presented to the BC Cancer Foundation at their inaugural “Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer”.
