Making Money - Making a Difference

As jobs became scarce and businesses falter, the need and personal desire to excel financially has created a generation that views financial matters much differently than in past years.

April 25, 2012 - PRLog -- As jobs became scarce and businesses falter, the need and personal desire to excel financially has created a generation that views financial matters much differently than in past years.  Sure, financial security is something we all strive for in life but we should also be examining how each of us can make a difference along the way too.

Many individuals have become entrepreneurs, starting their own individual business structures to try and “make ends meet.”  And some business plans have been created to help others get a boost in this challenging economic climate we find ourselves in today.

One company in Washington, DC called “Dress for Success” has developed a undertaking that has help over 4,000 women develop their confidence to find and keep a job by offering them the clothing, free of charge, so they can present a successful appearance while looking for work or attending interviews.  “Dress for Success” asks employees of private sector and government organizations to donate clothing for their cause.  Not only have they allowed these women to improve their appearance, they have helped these individuals develop their interview skills, and an understanding of how to keep a job once they get one.  This non-profit does all of this with only three full-time employees and an army of volunteers.

This is just one example of a new business that is not only creating wealth for the employees of the organization but also for those they are committed to help.  They are indeed making a difference in today's economy.

It’s easy to just roll over and give up but with a little imagination, any organization can make a huge difference for those who are currently struggling in our society and, many times, this can lead to even larger profits.  Word of mouth is a powerful tool that can help your business grow simply because of philanthropy.  People remember those who helped them when they needed it most.

Other companies have targeted specific groups that are experiencing large jobless rates.  For example, many military Reservists and National Guardsmen are returning from combat to find that the companies they previously worked for no longer exist.  Military members and their spouses have found themselves in some very precarious financial situations after serving the country with dedication and bravery.  Military veterans have a wide variety of skill sets that can help almost any business with a minimum amount of training.  It’s a “win-win” situation; you can help your business grow while helping those who need help the most.

It doesn’t take a large company to change lives or situations.  Many companies today are using 10 to 15 percent of their profits to give back to non-profit organizations by donating products and services to others who really need a boost.  I believe that, even though everyone is struggling, some are doing better than others.  If there was ever a time to get involved, it’s today.  I urge you not to simply center on making money.  Consider making a difference along the way.
