The most critical skill no one ever taught you: Forgiveness

   Easter is a time many have made new decisions to live more Christian lives.  Often, this requires forgiving others and forgiving themselves.  As easy as it is to say, it is difficult to do.  It is a skill that we know we should have, but since almost none of us were taught how to actually do it, few of us can do it effectively or teach it to others.

   Conway says there is a lot of very bad teaching out there about forgiveness.  Forgive and forget is a particular pet peeve of his.  There is worse teaching out there.  “Aren’t you lucky” that happened to you, and a “nothing bad happened” teaching – both of which he discusses in his training - are particularly dangerous.

   The five step forgiveness technique is: 1. Middle of the Memory, 2. Determine the Wrong, 3. Determine the Lessons, 4. Let Go of the Bad, 5. File the Bad, Walk Away with the Good.  Conway says it is important to prepare step 2 and 3 before walking in to step 1.  He strongly advocates using the full five step system on minor things for practice before trying it on intensely emotional issues.

   Conway uses this system as a pastoral counselor and as a life coach.  Once a client has learned the system, it can be done by individuals all alone without a counselor or coach.  For very intense issues, as a matter of emotional safety, it is good to have someone to help guide you through.

   Conway also knows “pain free” forgiveness systems that he will sometimes use in one-on-one sessions.  Even when he does these, he always leads clients to the admittedly sometimes emotional five step system.  The key reason for this is because the ultimate forgiveness skill is to forgive in the middle of the event.  For this, Conway says, you must be able to forgive and let go in the middle of your emotion.  “You must be able to choose to do the right thing when you desperately want to do the wrong thing.”

   Pure Power is one of several programs available commercially through Conway’s website.  He is teaching this system at his church at no charge.  His training is also available for other churches, not-for-profits and any and all organizations that understand how important forgiveness is in their day to day success.
