BAM Outsource believes that criticism is a loaded word to use, perhaps feedback or advice would be more appropriate. The way that you give it to someone will in some cases heavily affect your future relationship with that person. When it’s a working relationship at stake, and your business or project might be suffering because of the problem, having a constructive conversation is essential. Here are BAM Outsource’s suggestions.

Firstly it’s essential to ask their permission. Try asking, ‘Can I give you some feedback?’ or ‘Can I offer you some advice?’ This gives them time to prepare mentally and also gives the conversation an even power dynamic, it becomes a discussion rather than a telling off. You’re not saying you’re right and they’re wrong but simply offering advice and an alternative.

Secondly it’s important to be direct and honest. If you want to get the most out of it tell them the problem and offer them a solution. Then ask for their thoughts and input.  You might come to a better compromise than your initial suggestion.”

Finally is a suggestion that is incredibly important to BAM Outsource.  It’s essential to give feedback, good and bad, often. If you only do it once in a blue moon when something is dramatically wrong of course it’s going to feel very negative. If you praise them for the good and point out the problems as you go along people are going to take criticism much less personally.
