The Fastest Growing Jobs In The US And Lessons South African Job Seekers Can Learn

Top ten fastest growing occupations over the next eight years until 2020
Feb. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- As the US demographic shifts toward increasingly older people, the US Bureau of Labor has forecasted the top ten fastest growing occupations over the next eight years until 2020.

The fastest job growth is expected from Personal Care Aides. Personal Care Aides will grow at 7% p.a. and does not require any form of education, not even a school leaving diploma and currently earns around $1640/month.

Home Health aides show slightly less than a 7% annual increase in demand. Home Health Aides require some basic health care training through to more sophisticated training for complicated home based patient care. Biomedical Engineers are College and Post-Graduates, the demand for these graduates is estimated to grow at some 6.2% p.a. with earnings around $6700/month.

As a consequence of the meltdown of the housing market there is a 6% p.a. projected need for specialised construction workers. The specific categories growing at this rate are Brickmasons, Blockmasons, Stonemasons and Tile and Marble Setters. Earning around $2300/month these workers require limited, if any, formal education to become tradesmen. Carpenters, especially those specialising in energy efficient construction, are in demand with a growth rate at 6% p.a. The average current wage is $2150/month and formal education is not required, but apprenticeship and on the job training is more commonplace.

Americans are pet lovers and Veterinary Technologists and Technicians, who require between two and four years college training, are going to grow by approximately 5.2% p.a.  These professionals will earn about $2500/month. The demand for building projects but especially repairing and replacing aging infrastructure will require Reinforcing Iron and Rebar workers with the demand increasing to 4.9% p.a. This work requires a High School Diploma and a three to four year apprenticeship and once qualified the expected income is $3200/month.

Physical Therapist Assistants are going to be in increasing demand at 4.6% p.a. due to changes in medical aid payment processes and the aging population. This job only requires a two year Associate Degree and the earnings are currently slightly over $4000/month. The return of the construction industry from its doldrums will also see a 4.5% annual increase in demand for Pipe layers, Plumbers and Steamfitters, these positions require no formal education and earn $2200/month.

An improving economy and continual globalisation will see the need to hold more Conventions and Events to bring people together in an increasing digital age. A College degree is a “nice to have" for Meeting, Convention, and Event Planners it is not a prerequisite like great organisational and people skills. At an annual growth rate of 4.4% and a salary of $3770/month this is the tenth fastest growing job as predicted by the US Bureau of Labor.

Commenting on these latest US Labor statistics, Neville Berkowitz, CEO of a South African job portal says, "The US student loan indebtedness is level with credit card indebtedness in the US both around $1 trillion each. What is interesting to note is the obsession of going to College to get a degree. Incurring indebtedness that takes 5-10 years to repay is not going to be rewarded by careers in 7 of the top 10 fastest growing jobs over the next eight years in the US."

"South African job seekers must realise what jobs are needed. South African research shows that the areas of botany, design, distribution and freight movement, engineering, finance, fast moving consumer goods in retail and wholesale, HR, IT, maritime, marketing, medical, mining, motor, property and sales are job among the highest demand in South Africa.

During mid-2012 our revolutionary employment portal will be launching a free Skills Training Database of over 3500 skill training courses where potential employees, currently employed people and entrepreneurs can develop skills required by South African employers. In the third quarter of 2012, our outstanding job portal will be launching a Bursary Fund to help finance the maths and science teachers of tomorrow", says the career portal’s Neville Berkowitz.
