Job Creation For Women Can Tap Into An Under-Utilised Workforce

There is an urgent need to integrate more skilled women into the workforce either as employees but preferably as entrepreneurs, in time, to become employers themselves.
 
Feb. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- According to AMPS 2011, in South Africa 6.4 million women between the ages of 20 and 50 have a child below the age of 14. Only 26% of these women are employed full time and 9% are employed part time. Therefore, only 35% of women who have children under 14 years old are in the workplace.

In the USA women make up 46.7% of the labour force. 58.6% of all women 16 years and over were in the labour force compared to 71.2% of all men according to the US Bureau of Labour 2010 statistics.

The United Nations 2015 Millennium Development Goals ranks the promotion of gender equality and empowering woman their 3rd most important goal. After ending hunger and poverty, and providing universal education, gender parity acknowledges that equal access to education is the foundation for all other development goals.

There is a strong willingness to work from unemployed mothers in South Africa, however, the skills training component is missing. Most of these unemployed women have basic school education, minimal, if any, tertiary education and limited skills training. However, they have the ability and willingness to learn skills but lack the opportunity to do so.

This opportunity is based on four important criteria: Firstly, access to skills training programmes. Secondly, the finance required to attend classes to learn skills. Thirdly, the ability to have their children taken care of whilst attending skills training, and fourthly, the opportunity to find work, or become self-employed, once they have acquired a valued skill.
