Big River Talks With Optimist Club

Feb. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Big River Telephone employees, Steve Maldonado and Lauren Dirnberger, along with Major Beth Stillwell from the Salvation Army, joined the Cape Evening Optimists Club on Thursday, February 9th to speak about their efforts to help feed area families through various philanthropic ventures.

Big River representatives spoke about what the employees do to support the community through philanthropic activities, especially during the holiday season. Each year Big River hosts numerous special events, such as their Annual Holiday Turkey Drive. During this annual event the employees are able to help provide thousands of meals for needy families throughout the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Big River’s Turkey Drive is part of a partnership with Schnucks, the Salvation Army, Withers Broadcasting, J98 and Country Mart.

The meeting was followed by Major Beth Stillwell, with the Salvation Army, discussing how much Big River and the Optimists Club’s contributions mean to them and the families they feed. Stories were then shared by people in the room about how they have witnessed individuals that were in need at one point in their life and now are willing to give back to the Salvation Army, the organization that helped them.

Big River employee and Optimist Club member Jody Simmons attended the meeting that evening and said, “It’s an honor and pleasure to help those in need. It fills my heart to give so others can have enough.  Big River is generous in giving back to the community on many levels and I am happy that I am able to work for a company that lets me contribute my time to show my support.”
