RateTea Breaks Out Ben Shan Oolong Tea Into Its Own Category, Among Se Chung Oolong Teas

Jan. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- RateTea, an online community where anyone can rate and review teas, has broken out Ben Shan oolong tea into a category of its own.

Ben shan, sometimes translated as "source mountain", is a style of se chung oolong tea.  Se chung oolongs refer to all varietals of oolong produced in Anxi county of Fujian province in China, other than Tie Guan Yin, which is also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy.  Among all the se chung oolongs, ben shan is the varietal usually considered to most closely resemble Tie Guan Yin.  Ben shan oolong tends to be produced in the greener style, with a light roast and low oxidation level, and tightly rolled leaves producing a strong a floral aroma.

Prior to the breakout, RateTea had lumped Ben Shan oolong in with the other se chung oolongs, a category which also contains generic blends of different se chung varietals.  The change reflects growth in RateTea's database or catalogue of teas, such that there are now enough ben shan oolongs listed to warrant this particular style of tea having its own category, and also reflects RateTea's commitment to being the most comprehensive tea resource on the web, with articles on even many of the more unusual and esoteric types of tea.
