Tips for Navigating Airports when Traveling with Children

Jan. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Passing through security at an airport is a serious matter for all travelers, but it can be downright frightening for children!  To make the process as stress-free as possible, follow these safety protocols while traveling with children.

First, role play at home.  If flying with two adults, it is suggested that one adult pass through security, followed by the children, then finally the other adult.  While still at home, show your children how to wait patiently for the last adult, and not to get distracted or wander off.  

Second, arrive at the airport two hours prior to your scheduled take off.  Child safety advocate, Michael Pouls, explains that, “this way, you will have ample time to check your luggage, get through security, check in at the gate, and visit the restroom before boarding the plane.  Rushing while in the airport will only make an anxious child more nervous.”  

Third, when you do arrive, take the time to show your children how to identify security guards, pointing out their uniform and badges, and remind your children to seek help from a security guard if they become separated from you.  

While on that topic, remind your children that the airport is full of people you don’t know, and that just like when they are at the mall or park, they should not talk to anyone without your permission.  Michael Pouls warns, “Remember that the airport is a public place and not to let your guard down even though you may already be in a vacation frame of mind.”  

Always keep an eye on your child.  Many people are rushing from one place to another in an airport, and it is easy for the little ones to get swept up in a fast moving crowd.  For this reason, Michael Pouls advises that parents provide their children with their contact information so that they have it in the event of an emergency.  As Michael Pouls explains, “It’s a good idea to write your names and cell phone numbers on a piece of paper, and tuck it in your child’s pocket.  This way, if he/she does get lost, a security guard can swiftly reunite the family by calling your cell phone.”

Finally, don’t forget to include an extra set of clothing in your carry on in case of spills, and remember to pack extra diapers for the little ones in the event of unexpected delays.
