Jan. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- The first SWAT team made the scene at the Los Angeles Police Department, established by inspector Daryl Gates in 1968. It was initiated as a result of several sniping incidents against civilians and police officers. Such incidents include the Watts Riots in Los Angeles. The first SWAT Unit consisted of 15 four-man teams. The members that made up each team, volunteered from the ranks of patrol or other police assignments and had specialized prior military experience.

"S.W.A.T.", which stands for "Special Weapons and Tactics" is an elite tactical unit within various law enforcement departments nationwide. These highly-skilled individuals are trained to perform high-risk operations that are outside the realm of regular officers. From hostage rescues, counter-terrorism operations, conducting high-risk arrests and serving search warrant, these SWAT members are ready for action. Equipped with specialized firearms ranging from equipment such as submachine guns, assault rifles, breaching shotguns, riot control agents, stun grenades and sniper rifles.

To protect themselves from the harm and dangers that comes with their job, they wear and carry specialized equipment like heavy body armor, ballistics shield, entry tools, armored vehicles, motion detectors and night vision optics to aid in hostage situations and operations that take place at night.

Since it's inception in Los Angeles, the SWAT team has expanded to other police departments in various other cities in America as well as Canada, serving at the federal and state levels of government. They have established for themselves their own elite unit under various names but still remain collectively called SWAT. SWAT training is done monthly to keep this elite unit up to standards at all times for any given situation.

With the direction of the Chief of Police/Incident Commander, the SWAT team's mission is to provide a well-disciplined, efficiently trained unit that can handle the most extreme dangerous situations. In Williamsburg, Virginia, for example, eighteen officers make up a SWAT team and are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is in addition to their regular assigned duties.
