By: Sonja griesbach We didn't fully appreciate the significance of this and the machine was thrown out in the 60's, inadvertently destroyed. We've been on a quest to find that replacement machine since then. So we finally found it and our committee, Steve Holt and Scott Ellis are going up to Kimble, Nebraska, which is a 9 hour drive to pick it up. They are going to be heading out soon in just a few minutes so we will be saying goodbye. But, you know getting this machine back is going to be a big deal for our committee and what this means for the home of sliced bread. Our museum is working with us a lot, Kansas City Public Television (who is here today), along with KQ2 and we're really appreciative of that. We're working on creating a documentary of the whole sliced bread story. Just think how cool that would be; The Otto Rohwedder, the Chillicothe Story, the Saying, 'The Home of Sliced Bread', and that could be a corner piece of our museum. When you can walk into a museum having the documentary and the story on how we have an original machine and our Bread Test, which we're going to have in April. We've had our annual World Championship of Bread Baking. So a lot of things exciting are going on. We're starting to sell a lot of gift items of sliced bread. When people come through town, stop at some of our stores and get shirts, golf balls, tees, and of course, we have our Sliced Bread Mural and the website and we're getting all of our city logos with Home of Sliced Bread because that's the official logo. I want to thank Brent Kline and Woody's for their sponsorship of this. We needed transportation and so they've provided the site and also provided the vehicle and we're very appreciative of that. Would you like to say something, Brent?" "Yes, sure. All I'd like to say is how cool it is to be involved with this event. When I was listening to Ed talk I was thinking about two words and they were innovation and entrepreneurship. And it takes innovation and it takes entrepreneurship to really succeed in today's society. So, I think it's really awesome to be a part of it. I thank the home of sliced bread committee for everything. I can remember Ed pushing this really hard when we found this out, Kathy Ripley discovered the information. I can remember Ed just jumping on board and saying, 'You know what? That's going to be our claim to fame. That is Chillicothe, we are the home of sliced bread and we're the greatest thing since sliced bread!' He just pushed so hard and got a lot of other people on board. I'm very thankful for Ed's leadership. I'm thankful to the home of sliced bread committee for just being very diligent finding this machine, bringing it to Chillicothe and continuing to put Chillicothe on the map because we really are the greatest thing since sliced bread!! So I just think it's very cool to be a part of it and thank you." "Steve and Scott are going to be heading out, KCPT will be following them. We're ready to go! Your stories will be interesting.
