Innovation or Imitation – The Strategies of Giants

Sean Sheehan of MkM Direct talks about the business strategies of giants Apple and Google – who should we look to for inspiration?
 
Nov. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- “The Global Market and Business world are changing every day, it doesn’t matter what industry your’re in” says Sean Sheehan of MkM Direct, “A great example of this would be the mobile phone industry.” Ever since the first Smartphone was introduced, it was “one of the coolest things that ever happened to mankind”. People loved the appearance of Smartphone, along with the applications, internet access etc. so companies used this to their advantage. Two of the biggest companies to take advantage and jump on board were Google and Apple.

Apple started as a hardware company. They created the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mancintosh etc. and now they make Software too. They have a huge customer base due to successful branding. The materials they produce are at top standard, but because their products are expensive, they leave space for other companies to create similar products and sell them at a lower price. Apple did create the first popular, every day Smartphone, which changed the mobile industry forever. It forced rival companies to rethink their strategies.  People wanted more features and better quality at better prices, so companies started to come up with new idea’s just like Apple did.

Google took a slightly different approach. Google started to use Mobile Hardware when they purchased Motorola Mobile for $12.5 million. They took old ideas from old existing mobiles and improved them by developing their own Smartphone. A drawback from this was that they were titled as “copying” Apple’s new technology, but what Google really did was take and existing idea and improve on the old idea incorporating new and old features.

Google took existing ideas and changed to address a gap in the market, while Apple made their own ideas and creations, developing a unique branding image in a brand new market that hadn’t existed before.  Sheehan explains that every day as a business owner and entrepreneur you have a very important choice to make between taking what exists and improving on it and making it yours, or blazing a trail and creating something totally new.

Each has its merits and its pitfalls with potential for huge success or failure. “They key is to always stay on top of things, never sit still, always keep on top of the market and on top of your competitors and what they’re up to, then you are in a position to ask yourself the question: Am I going to be like Apple or am I going to be like Google? The choice is yours, and either way you can’t go wrong. “
