Oct. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Autumn’s colorful foliage and cooler temperatures in DeKalb County, Ala. provide an ideal setting for a handful of festivals and special events throughout the month of November. Residents and visitors to the area can choose from several family-friendly activities including a celebration at the Little River Canyon Center, a turkey toss, gospel singing, or holiday open houses.

Art, science, nature and fun come together Saturday, November 5, 2011 in celebration of the natural wonder of the Little River Canyon. Canyon Fest offers a day of live music, dance, nature, films, art, activities, and fun for the entire family. Dozens of artists and exhibitors will be on hand offering demonstrations and selling their work. NASA will present a traveling space theater. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and all activities are held at the Little River Canyon Center located at 4322 Little River Trail NE (472 Alabama Highway 35) in Fort Payne. There is no admission fee, but donations supporting the Little River Canyon Center will be accepted.

Northeast Alabama Community College Theatre presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” November 11-13 and 18-20, 2011. Centered on a fictional spelling bee in Putnam County, six overachieving teenage misfits face off in what appears to be the battle of their lives. This Tony-award winning play makes a couple of telling points about winning or losing and fitting in. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. All seats are reserved. Tickets are $5 each.

The Collinsville Historic Turkey Trot is set for Saturday, November 12, 2011. The day-long event features an antique car and tractor show, a turkey shoot, cake walk, and a 5K run, but what makes this event truly unique is the historic “turkey toss” from the roof of a building in downtown Collinsville. Sponsored in part by the Collinsville Historic Association, hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free. All activities are held in and around historic downtown Collinsville.

November 18-19, 2011, Broadway Baptist Church in Rainsville will host the 76th National Publishers Gospel Singing Convention. This marks the group’s first appearance in DeKalb County. The public is invited to take part in the two day celebration of Southern gospel music. Singing begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and is also scheduled for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. Broadway Baptist Church is located at 99 McCurdy Avenue South in Rainsville.

With the Christmas season gearing up, several local merchants are planning special holiday activities and open houses in November. Tiger Lily Florist, Catering, and Gifts is hosting a Christmas Open House November 5-6, 2011 offering a weekend filled with refreshments and storewide discounts. Hours are Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tiger Lily is located at 601 Gault Avenue South in Fort Payne.
