Helen Dao, MHA, to Be Panelist at American Heart Association’s Tú Corazon Latino Summit

Oct. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Helen Dao, MHA, President and CEO of Dao Management Consulting Services, Inc., will be a panel speaker for the American Heart Association’s Tú Corazon Latino Summit on October 27, 2011. The summit, which will be held from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the Time Warner Center Theater in New York City, is targeted at CEOs, physicians, non-profit and community leaders, hospital executives, and other stakeholders in health and wellness.

Dao will be one of four expert panelists who will discuss and answer questions about cultural competence and health literacy issues relevant to Latinos, America’s fastest growing population segment.

“Providers need to understand cultural nuances and differences when they are treating Latino individuals. Not every Latino is the same.  What they perceive about illness and health practices, and how they communicate with the provider is very dependent upon their subculture – whether they are from Puerto Rico, El Salvador, or one of the many other Hispanic subcultures,” says Dao. “I will discuss how providers can use Simple Language to communicate with Latino health care consumers, and how Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards relate to cultural competence in health care.”

Dao is a recognized expert in the field of cross-cultural communication in health care. She works with health care institutions such as Los Angeles Children’s Hospital to remove the cultural and language barriers that minority and underserved individuals can face in health care.

The American Heart Association (http://www.heart.org) has a national goal: by 2020, to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20%, while reducing death from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20%. To reach this goal, AHA must address the needs of Latinos. The Tú Corazon Latino Summit brings Latino leadership together with AHA experts, programs and research.
