Oct. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- A 62-year-old patient suffering from advanced arthritis of both hips and knees was operated upon in a very challenging surgery by Dr. Mudit Khanna of Wockhardt Hospitals Group.

On suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for nearly three decades, the patient had tried various medications that had an adverse effect on his bones and joints; causing him to lose his mobility and become bedridden. In the month of May 2011, his family consulted Dr. Mudit Khanna at Wockhardt Hospitals on hearing about his expertise and the successful joint replacement surgeries he had performed even in difficult and advanced stages of Hip and Knee Arthritis. Having received extensive training in joint-related disorders in England and a MCh degree in Orthopaedics, Dr. Mudit Khanna has performed many such highly skilled and challenging surgeries.

“This was an exceptional case, where the scenario was extremely challenging as the patient had a fixed flexion deformity in his left knee and simultaneous fixed flexion deformities in both his right hip & right knee,”, said Dr. Mudit Khanna. Performing a hip replacement without replacing the knees can increase the risk of a hip dislocation and a knee replacement alone would not have guaranteed an optimal alignment. Undoubtedly, the best option here was performing both the hip as well as the knee replacement in a same sitting.

The surgery was planned in two stages. An isolated knee replacement was performed on the left side in stage one, to give the patient a functional left lower limb. The operation was a success with the patient achieving a completely pain-free post-operative recovery and a full range of movements in the left knee. A total right knee replacement and a right hip replacement were performed simultaneously in stage two in a surgery that is possible only at advance health care centres. Following the success of the surgery in stage two, the patient has left behind the bedridden life and is now able to walk independently with minimal walking aids. He will also soon begin walking without any aids to live a pain-free & normal life.

“The competent team of medical staff at Wockhardt, the immensely strong back up from the Intensive Care Unit, and the state-of-the art facilities make such advanced surgeries see a high rate of success at Wockhardt Hospitals”, said Mr. Chinmay Gheewala (Asst.
