Sept. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Grand Rapids, Mich., September 21, 2011 – Do you remember the DC earthquake from last month? Maybe a earthquake a hundred miles away damaged your home.  Your new 50" 3D television fell off your very old television stand. Your bookcase holding your expensive Faberge egg collection fell over, and you have the sneaking suspicion that your house is now crooked.

Were you covered? Are you covered?

Probably not. According to the Insurance Institute of Michigan (IIM), earthquake damages normally are not covered under an individual’s regular insurance policies. Home insurance policies protect a home and all the other assets and personal properties inside from theft, damage, fire, national calamities and so on. But does it cover earthquake damages?

Home insurance usually will cover any fire or water damages, maybe even damages to vehicles, but without the proper coverage, homeowners and renters in Michigan may need to pay out-of-pocket to cover other damages caused by an earthquake. How often does an earthquake occur in Michigan, not often? Well, IIM Executive Direct Peter Kuhnmuench states “Since 1900, earthquakes have occurred in 39 states and caused damages in all 50 states.” So while earthquakes aren't likely in your neck of the woods they are possible.

Homes are one of the biggest and most vital assets to many people. It is where you and your family have movie night, and a haven when you retire from the rest of the world to hang out in your boxers. Protection against all possible damages is important, because you never know what may happen. From your boy breaking a window with a baseball, to an earthquake, to any number of possibilities.

The point is to be as prepared as possible, so that when your Faberge egg collection is in shells you know it will work out. If you do a little work now to make sure you have the right coverage, you'll save yourself from a good amount of worry later.
