Follow on Google News | High hopes for insulation in SwindonMark Group completes external wall insulation work on eight storey apartment building in Swindon.
By: Mark Group Following a competitive tendering process managed by Swindon Commercial Services, on behalf of Swindon Borough Council, Mark Group was contracted to install specialist insulation treatment to George Hall Court - a 1970’s apartment building, constructed of solid concrete walls. A landmark of the Cavendish Square mixed-use development, George Hall Court had been clad with external wall insulation when it was first built. However, with changes in building regulations and Swindon Borough Council’s commitment to improve the thermal efficiency of its housing stock, the residential block was one of a number of properties earmarked for improvement. Alumasc’s 30mm thick Phenolic insulation system was used for the project, based on its high thermal performance and ease of application. This was also the first time a previously insulated building of this scale had been overclad with external wall insulation. David Sherlock, Divisional Head for Solid Wall Insulation at Mark Group, said: “George Hall Court has been a significant project for us to work on. It provided an opportunity to not only demonstrate our capabilities for installing external wall insulation, but also for working at height - something which is heavily scrutinised in our industry.” Work began in earnest in February 2011 and continued for a period of four months, during which time the Council and residents were kept fully informed of planned activities and any disruptions. Mark Walker Policy and Regeneration Manager of Swindon Borough Council added: “We are really pleased with the external improvements to George Hall Court which are the final phase of Council works to the wider Cavendish Square Regeneration project. The visual impact of the works, are very impressive and help lift the feel and appearance of the square and the wider neighbourhood which is a very important part of the regeneration of this neighbourhood. Feedback from local tenants, residents and local Councillors has been very positive and they are pleased to see these improvements.” Mark Group’s work for Swindon Borough Council adds to its growing portfolio of ‘hard to treat’ social housing insulation projects. David continued: “Looking back at the completed project, the additional regeneration benefits of external wall insulation can be clearly seen. External wall insulation helps save energy and provides a more comfortable living environment for residents, but the finished appearance of a building can also have a positive effect on local communities - something which is evident at Cavendish Square.” Mark Group is the UK’s leading installer of energy saving solutions.
