Aug. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- In what could be the most delicate Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery performed, doctors at Wockhardt Hospital successfully operated on a 65-year-old patient with an extremely poor heart condition.

Spearheading the team of doctors at Wockhardt was Dr. Kaiche – an expert Heart Surgeon who has trained at Oxford (UK) & Australia. Explaining the case, Dr. Kaiche said, “The heart function is divided into Normal (60%), Mild Dysfunction (50%-60%), Moderate (35%-50%) & Severe Dysfunction (20%-35%). In this case, the patient had just 15% heart condition. The age of the patient further added to the complication of the surgery.” Such high-risk surgeries demand surgeons with excellent technical skills. Even by standards of Dr. Kaiche who has performed innumerable cardiac surgeries, 14% of which has been on patients with a poor heart function, this surgery demanded detailed pre-operative & post-operative planning. The surgery was carried out with immense precision that was backed with excellent post-operative care. A witness to this is the fact that the patient was discharged on the 7th day after the operation.

Though Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is accepted as the safest & the best treatment for patients with multiple blockages in all 3 coronary arteries, this option becomes risky to be adopted for patients with Severe Dysfunction. The risk of complication in CABG is inversely proportional to the heart function, the lower the heart function, the greater is the risk. In case of Severe Dysfunction, the risk increases fivefold. In such cases, Heart Transplantation has proved to offer excellent results. However, the scarcity of donor organs makes this option impractical for a majority of patients. CABG on the other hand has demonstrated significant clinical improvement and long term survival.

Extremely pleased with the development, Mr. Chinmay Gheewala (Asst. General Manager, Wockhardt Hospitals Group) said, “Dr. Kaiche is exceptionally dexterous. It’s the aptitude of Dr. Kaiche and other doctors that enables Wockhardt to achieve excellence & touch the lives of people”.
