About Dave Shulter

Born and raised in Saint Clairsville, Ohio, Dave Shutler is the youngest of three kids. He started weightlifting when he was in junior high school, but was not very good at it - at first. Not only was Dave overtraining, but also he was also not taking the right supplements and eating poorly. It was not until he got into college that things changed. Dave started reading books and researching everything and anything about health, fitness, bodybuilding, nutrition, and any other related topic.

After graduating from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA with a degree in Intelligence Studies, Dave went to Washington DC to work for the Secret Service for 3½ years, while continuing his training and setting his sights toward the future. He eventually ended his tenure with the Secret Service and went to another job, while also being certified as a personal trainer on the side. Currently Dave does the personal training as a part time job.

Although self-trained, Dave has entered many natural bodybuilding and fitness competitions in the past couple of years. He has entered Fitness Model America competitions in NYC, Miami & Vegas and placed 12th out of 75+ competitors in Miami, 15th out of 45+ in Vegas, and 3rd in NYC. He has also won the novice class in the OCB Yorton Cup Natural Bodybuilding Championships in 2009 in Washington DC, and in every other bodybuilding show, Dave has competed in; he has always placed in the top five.

Dave typically changes his workout regiment about every 6 weeks, but more importantly than his routine, he focuses more on his diet. Dave says, “To be a fitness model, you have to be in shape 24/7. This is what separates us from bodybuilders, who are in shape for a month or two out of the year. Dave believes that fitness is a personal thing and to each his own, but his preference is to be in shape all the time. His workout routine is usually at the gym 4-5 days a week lifting weights and doing cardio 3-4 days at least. He takes one day completely off and rest, and the other rest day involves some light cardio or walking on a treadmill.

Moreover, than working out, Dave feels that diet is as important as how one works out. Diet primarily relies on whether he is trying to bulk up a bit or cut down. He eats a lot of the same foods, and just manipulate the calories to about 300-500 above or below maintenance (goal depending). Sometimes Dave throws in a nice cheat meal once or twice a week. Other than that though, his diet is on point and kept pretty strict. "I don't really consider it a diet, because I like everything I eat," says Dave. "The only thing that changes is how much I am eating."

Dave is not only a certified personal trainer, but has recently graduated from massage therapy school and is also a licensed massage therapist, which he will combine with his personal training.

Dave played high school and college baseball and high school football, but now his hobbies include the gym and anything that has to do with fitness, cooking, massage therapy, and networking with others.

Standing at 6-feet tall and at 200 pounds and hovering between 6-8% bodyfat most of the time, recently Dave has adopted a training philosophy recommended by pro natural bodybuilder Layne Norton - a power/hypertrophy split. It involves earlier in the week focusing on more of a power phase (more weight/less reps) and later in the week split the body parts and focus on more of a hypertrophy response(moderate weight/more reps) and better pump. Although he currently comes in with a 44-inch chest, 18-inch arms, and 26-inch quads, Dave’s favorite body part to work is his back and his hamstrings coming in as his least favorite part to work.

Dave currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia.
