July 29, 2011 - PRLog -- History is filled with intriguing stories of the past.  Our modern world can hardly compare with the true grit it took to conquer the Wild West.  As with any age, there was a period of transition from the old into the new.  For the west, that time fell between 1860 and 1920 when the world was being turned upside down by new inventions such as electrical power, steam engines, and later automobiles.  

Along the way of progress were revolvers, gunslingers, and lawlessness.  And Deadwood, South Dakota was not exempt.  Throw in the word ‘gold’ and you now have the thrill of your life.  This never before experienced rush made some wealthy, yet for many others it cut their time short.  Wild Bill Hickock died at the young age of 39.  He was a famous figure among the folks in Deadwood.  It was there he befriended Martha Jane Cannary Burke, better known to many as Calamity Jane.  

With steam engines pulling trains into the remote town, you had a booming mining community.  These railroad cars brought prospectors filled with renewed hope, desiring to make their fortune; but they also brought an evil fueled by greed.  It was believed ‘there was gold in them there hills’ of the Dakotas, and everyone wanted their share – some regardless of how they attained it.

It was in the Black Hills where a young couple struck it rich.  This discovery would have a profound effect upon a lot of people.  Some of it was good and some not so good.  While all this was going on here in America, South Africa was also coming into its own.  Gold and diamond mines pulled prospectors from all over the world into a small town called Kimberley, South Africa.  Although continents apart, eventually the two worlds collide in "North by Northwest."
