(www.dermaclose.com), an emerging medical technology company focused on the commercialization of external tissue expansion devices, announced the presentation of research conducted by Ian G. Valerio MD and Patrick L. Basile MD (Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD investigating the wound area reduction capabilities of the DermaClose RC®  Continuous External Tissue Expander as it applies to the treatment of traumatic war injuries.
The presentation entitled, “Triage and Treatment Algorithm for War Injuries,” was presented on June 30th at the 2011 World Congress of Microsurgery in Helsinki, Finland. The presentation described how the use of external tissue expansion has allowed surgeons to maximize their donor tissue and decrease the morbidity of large donor defects. The new technology has also decreased the size of soft tissue defects not requiring tissue transfer but needed coverage such as skin grafting. By decreasing the overall size of the wounds the amount of autograft needed is greatly decreased which is a huge benefit to our wounded warriors who have large areas of injury.

Paul J. Anderson, President and CEO of Wound Care Technologies, said, “The presentation of this important research at the World Congress of Microsurgery demonstrates the global interest in the role of continuous external tissue expansion in the treatment of traumatic injuries”.

About DermaClose RC®
DermaClose® RC is a continuous external tissue expander that facilitates rapid tissue movement to reduce or re-approximate wounds. The first-of-its-kind device utilizes skin anchors and a tension controller that applies a continuous controlled dynamic pulling force and does not require additional tightening after initial application. The tension will be maintained from hours to days until desired amount of expanded tissue is achieved and the device is removed.
