July 14, 2011 - PRLog -- A marketed drug generally has four different types of name.
1. Chemical name: This is given based on the chemical composition of the drug.Example: 7-chloro-1,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one Diazepam for trade name drug Valium.
4-[4-(p-chlorophenyl)-4-hydroxypiperidino]-4'-fluorobutyrophenone for trade name Haldol.
2. A company name/Code: This is the code given by the company that is developing the drug. Until the drug is completely developed and a generic name is given, this code name is used to identify the drug
3. Generic name: This is a name given to a developed drug. It is also called as international non-proprietary name and is assigned to identify the active pharmaceutical ingredients.
4. Brand name or trade name: A patented drug is given a brand name by the company. This is protected by the trademark law and is owned by the company that has exclusive rights to use the name. The generic name and trade name are the most commonly used names for the drugs.
Generic Name

The generic name is given by the respective regulatory authorities of the country where the
drug is developed. In the United States, the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council
which is an official body assigns the generic name. The generic name is unique and identifies
the composition of the drug, thus making it easier to remember for medical providers. Prescriptions can be given in both generic as well as trade names. Trade Name or Brand Name
The brand name or trade name is assigned by the company which holds the patent for the
drug. This name needs to be unique. Companies work extensively to get the best sounding,
appealing, unique and innovative name. They work to ensure that the chosen name gives a
peek into the intended use of the drug, is catchy and easy to remember. For example
Glucotrol controls high blood sugar (glucose) levels, Lipitor is 'lipid regulator', Vivactil is an
antidepressant that might make a person more vivacious, Lopressor lowers blood pressure,
Some of the most innovative trade names of drugs are Paxil, Effexor, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvoxand Zoloft.Recently there is a trend to give a prescription in its trade name due to effective marketing
techniques. The doctors come to know about the new drugs through marketing and sales
representatives of the company, thus making it easier to remember the trade name.
Here are more examples of generic and trade names of different drugs

1. Acetaminophen - trade name Tylenol
2. Diazepam - trade name Valium
3. Haloperidol - trade name Haldol
4. Cephalexin - trade name Keflex
