By: Jeff Williams Hyundai, sales set records; Honda, Toyota slammed by shortages Hyundai, in its June sales report today, went out of its way to highlight that 40% of its sales were its 40 mpg-on-the-highway cars -- mainly the new Accent subcompact ($14,995 with shipping to start) and hot-selling Elantra compact ($17,205 base), as well as the Sonata hybrid mid-size sedan ($26,545). And Hyundai calculated that it had a corporate average fuel economy level for cars sold in June of 35.9 mpg, and 35.7 mpg on sales year-to-date, which it says is best of any maker selling in the U.S. That's also a hair over the 2016 federal corporate average fuel economy mandate. While not mentioning any names (such as the $41,000 Chevy Volt and nearly $34,000 Nissan Leaf plug-ins), Krafcik was not bashful about touting Hyundai's approach to fuel economy. "The best way to reduce America's fuel consumption is to put more fuel-efficient vehicles in American driveways, right now," said Krafcik. "The best way to do that is to mass produce the most efficient technologies, like direct-injected engines and 6-speed transmissions, and deploy them as standard equipment, not expensive options. "That's why we're leading the industry in fuel efficiency and 40 MPG vehicle sales, and it's certainly a big driver of our overall sales growth this year."
