June 2011 - Barcelona’s beautiful iconic Belle Époque hotel, El Palace , has just opened the Mayan Luxury Spa - the final part of a €20 million refurbishment.

Inspired by Mayan culture, the new Mayan Luxury Spa uses traditional Mayan treatments together with products from the prestigious French beauty range, Anne Sémonin, for an unforgettable experience.  El Palace is the first hotel in Europe to house a detoxifying Temazcal Mexican sweat lodge, a Pre-Hispanic Sauna.  The word temazcal comes from the word temazcalli,  meaning "house of heat".  In ancient times it was used as part of a curative ceremony thought to purify the body, for healing the sick and improving health.  Volcanic stones are heated inside the sauna’s dome whilst aromatic steam from medicinal herbs purify the body and relax the mind.  

To extend the experience, guests can opt for ‘The Mayan Rebirth Ritual’. This is a spiritual healing ceremony led by a shaman, performed inside the Temazcal, which brings together the four basic elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire for this sacred Mayan Ritual combined with Mayan native sounds.
