Problem #1 - Free inspections are visual.  Visual bed bug inspections are flawed

A simple and common technique is to search for bed bugs visually.  The problem with this method is that the inspector is not actually looking for bed bugs.  They are looking for fecals spots, droppings, and eggs.  Fecal droppings are tiny black dots about the size of a pen drop.  If you have ever looked closely at your bed or under the couch cushions everything looks like tiny black dots.  When your furniture is not white, the challenge to find this symptom is significantly more difficult if not impossible.  

Problem #2 - Lack of experience and training

In addition to being flawed and extremely challenging to identify, very few professionals have enough experience or training with this pest.  This often results in misidentification of dirt and other debris as bed bug feces.

Problem #3 - The catch

Free inspections often come with a catch.  In this case the catch is getting your business.  But what if you really don't have bed bugs.  Though not true in all cases, it is common practice for the inspector to offer you treatment anyways.  They might tell you that something is bitting you and what they spray will kill that too.  Spraying chemicals in homes can be a very dangerous practice.  Proper identification of the pest is consider a must throughout the pest control industry.
