May 11, 2011 - PRLog -- A dance company from Coventry University is to use a variety of art forms to express the complex and emotive subject of mental and physical health.

The Tangled Thoughts Dance Company has been set up by dance making and performance student, Shona-Marie Ankers for her final year project as part of the Coventry
School of Art and Design (CSAD) annual degree show.

Her group of 12 female dancers, all current University students, will be using the performance in a bid to break through the barriers of fear and hurt in order to create a sense of acceptance with anybody suffering from mental and physical health problems.

Based on autobiographical experiences, ‘imPerfect’ is an accumulation of dance, image, projection and film and will be performed at the University’s Ellen Terry Building on Monday 23 May.

Shona-Marie, who originally comes from Stoke-on-Trent, hopes that the performance will give the audience an insight into what it is like for someone with mental and physical health problems to find acceptance in today’s society.

Shona-Marie said:

“Even in the 21st Century, there is still a stigma around mental and physical health problems. For some reason, people who suffer from these illnesses find themselves cut off or marginalised. For people without first-hand experience of mental and physical health-related illnesses, the subject is something to shy away from. I am hoping that our performance will not only by heart-warming and gripping for the audience but informative as well.”

‘imPerfect’ will be performed as part of Coventry University’s ‘Spectrum’ Performing Arts Festival which is part of the annual CSAD degree show.

The performance takes place on Monday 23 May at 6pm in studio 221 on the second floor of the Ellen Terry Building, the home of performing arts at Coventry University.

Tickets are priced at £4 and £3 for concessions and are available from Shona-Marie via the Tangled Thoughts Dance Company page on facebook.

All the money raised through ticket sales will be donated to the Leek Stroke Club in Staffordshire, a centre with a personal significance for Shona-Marie because of a family connection.
