Trueventus – Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

Any facility interested in optimized operations and profitability understands that a rigorous risk management process needs to be implemented – it only takes one serious incident to wipe out years of operating excellence and profit.

April 27, 2011 - PRLog -- So how do you determine the appropriate level if risk reduction? You may have realised that a PHA is often not sufficient, and putting every hazard scenario through QRA is overkill – so how do you approach this problem? Do you need a method to determine which hazard scenarios identified in the PHA need further analysis, and then a reliable method to analyse them? Do you need a method to determine if your existing, or proposed risk controls are effective in reducing risk to a tolerable level? Perhaps you need a method to determine the performance requirements (SIL) of additional risk controls that are required, or you need a method to comprehensively document this information in order to write a safety requirement specification? Often the driving force is the need to meet the requirements of internal risk management processes, regulatory authorities, or accepted safety standards – does this describe your situation? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you really should invest the time to learn the LOPA methodology.

When implemented correctly, LOPA provides a structured and consistent methodology to ensure that adequate risk controls are in place. It identifies which of the existing risk controls are effective as Independent Protection Layers, and whether additional risk controls are required; and if they are required it tells you the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements. Don’t waste money on unnecessary QRA studies; and don’t waste money on over engineered risk controls, or put people, environment and plant at risk with under engineered risk controls – make a wise investment and learn the LOPA method, how to implement it, and how to apply it correctly to your specific circumstances.
