April 12, 2011 - PRLog -- In this world of economic turmoil, its nice to know there will always be bars, and therefore a need for bartenders.  Unlike other industries, the bar industry doesn’t suffer as much during bad economic times.  It seems that no matter how bad things get, people still want to go out, enjoy a cold one and socialize.

Learning how to bartend can be a great way to make more money and meet interesting people – and it’d likely be one of the few jobs where you look forward to going to work each day.  Becoming a bartender, however, isn’t necessarily the easiest feat to accomplish.  But, learning all the ins and outs of the bartending industry before you apply for that bartending position is a good start to get your foot in the door.

Bartending basics are crucial if you are going to succeed as a bartender. Keep in mind, however, that great bartenders have BOTH the soft skills (they relate well with others) and the hard skills (bartending knowledge).

To be a good bartender, you need to:

1. Know about 30-50 core drinks
2. Have a good memory
3. Be able to work in a fast-paced environment
4. Enjoy people
5. Be OUTGOING and PERSONABLE

Filling a hole in the bartending industry, Reese Richards founded Bars-and-Bartending.com - a website providing free bartender education and training.
“It started off as a training site for a nightclub I was consulting for in Canada,” says Reese. “I needed a way to train the staff without having to take the time to coordinate training around everyone’s schedule.  So I decided to set up a website and then created and uploaded bartending training videos, articles and tutorials.  From there it grew to over 100 pages of bartending training and information – and now even includes a bar store carrying thousands of bar products and bar supplies.“

The website has experienced phenomenal growth since it first went online in 2010, and now gets close to 10,000 visitors a month. In addition to the website, the company also has a bartending YouTube channel (YouTube.com/barsandbartending), a Twitter channel (Twitter.com/bars_bartending) and a Facebook page (Facebook.com/barsandbartending) where bartenders and up-and-coming bartenders can come together to give advice, get tips and learn from others.
