Coventry Sports Foundation launch after school clubPrimary school children are being given the chance to enjoy afterschool activities thanks to a charity.
Thanks in part to funding from Coventry City Council, Coventry Sports Foundation, which manages the Alan Higgs Centre in Allard Way, the Xcel leisure Centre in Canley and Centre AT7 in Bell Green Road, will host sessions at the community centre every Monday and Thursday. Hannah Grainey, sports development officer for Coventry Sports Foundation, has organised the sessions which aim to give children access to after school activities outside of the usual sporting areas associated with the organisation. “We understand not all children are motivated by sport or physical activities and prefer to do things of a more creative or artistic nature,” she said. “That is why we wanted to offer something different from the usual exercise-based activities associated with Coventry Sports Foundation while still offering something which benefits the development of young people. “This centre is a fantastic facility, and quite unusual in the fact that it is run by the community, so we are delighted to be able to offer these sessions and help to make the most of the venue.” The sessions are open to all primary school children in the area and will cost just 50p which will be used to purchase refreshments for the youngsters. Wendy Jackson, community development manager, said: “Over the past 12 months we have taken on a number of staff who specialise in play rather than sport as we look to move into providing activities which will benefit other areas of children’s development. “Creative skills can be just as important as physical skills for youngsters in the long term, so it is our aim to provide a wide range of activities across our network allowing us to meet the needs of, and appeal to, as many people as possible.” For more information about the sessions contact Hannah Grainey on 02476 856956.
