“…my sculptures describe the vulnerability and insecurity most of us feel beneath our perceived exteriors. I look at the ways in which we define ourselves for others, at the awkwardness found there, and at what happens when that pretense is stripped away” - Ceramic figurative sculptor, Caitlin Applegate http://www.caitlinapplegate.com

If you’re looking for serene, unprovocative art, you won’t find it here. Caitlin Applegate's near life sized ceramic scultptures reflect her dauntless, evocative perception of the world around her. The work is emotive and raw in it's Hopper-esque approach.
Using information derived both from personal experience and empathetic observation, gestural nuance describes the figure, and the subtle intricacy of intimate relationships. This work explores the profound impact one person can have on another through placing psychologically and emotionally charged spaces between people; the dynamics of human interaction and the cultures that develop as a result of forced shared time.

About the artist
Caitlin received her MFA in 2007 from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. During this period of study, Caitlin received several awards including a commission from the Lincoln Arts Council and a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. After finishing her graduate study, Caitlin went on to work as an artist in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE.
In 2008, Caitlin moved to Upstate NY where she maintained an active studio practice in addition to teaching at SUNY Cortland. The following year, she worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor in ceramics at the School of Visual Arts at the Penn State University Park Campus. Presently, Caitlin is the glaze technician at Hunter College and a resident artist at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, NY where she works and teaches.

Artist Statement
The intersection, or in some cases, collision between public and private lives, provides a place to peer through the cracks in the mask we put on for one another each day. Alone or in intimate groups, the sculptures describe the vulnerability and insecurity most of us feel beneath our perceived exteriors. These sculptures examine the ways in which we define ourselves for others, at the awkwardness found there, and at what happens when that pretense is stripped away. Despite attempts to clothe and ornament or build the insulating walls of societal perception, we are in essence naked in front of one another.

Caitlin’s work has been exhibited both regionally and nationally, and she maintains an active studio practice in New York City.
