March 17, 2011 - PRLog -- I saw the comments on an English language news feed from typicalyspanish.com.  The comments have understandably caused upset not only to those affected by illegal housing issues.  Some people feel that there is an undertone of singling out a minority within our community some have even said there are racist tones.  In my experience it is wrong to suggest that people have settled illegally because they have purchased an illegal property.  We have British people living in illegal houses who own businesses, pay their taxes and work closely with the Spanish community.  Many sell Spanish manufactured products and give work to the local community.  They are very much part of our community they do not see themselves as members of a minority group within the greater community.  Singling these people out in this way is not helpful to community relations.

Overseas clients looking to buy in Spain are always keen to know if they will be accepted in to the community.  We have never had a problem saying that they will be welcomed but these comments give rise to concerns.  These comments not only affect the overseas property market but also tourism.  They give an inaccurate view of how the majority of Spanish people see the overseas settlers in relation to illegal housing.  Many Spanish people have been caught up in this situation and purchased illegal houses also.  I speak to many Spanish people day in and day out and their view is that the system failed and something should be done to put it right and prevent this happening again.  They do not point the finger at or blame minorities within the community for causing this situation.

Comments such as these will be picked up by the press and with the instant communication facilitated by the web can be sent round the world within hours of becoming public.  This does not give other countries a good view of Spain.   It makes us look as if we cannot handle our problems without blaming a section of our community which is certainly not the view of the majority and not the image that we and other companies work to promote to the international market”.
