March 2, 2011 - PRLog -- We would think that we were watching science fiction movie if we saw a laptop could be controlled by people’s eye. But now when we see the laptop, unveiled by Tobii, a Swedish company and Lenovo, proved to us spectacularly that laptops can perform a series of operations by tracking people’s eye. This is most likely a reformation in laptop technology: is it will be a general trend in laptop and notebook industrial, or will be applied in the hot device, tablet PC? We are not sure. But definitely, it is totally new and promising, and will work out something unexpected in the future.

How does this laptop work with people’s eyes? The laptop has a sensor bar below its display that tracks the user’s eyes. Once calibrated, it lets the user perform a variety of additional functions using their eyes, such as switching between open application windows or firing up a quick access taskbar. Other useful features of the technology include notifications that pop up right on the spot where you’re looking at.

Most of the eye-controlled capabilities they'd baked into the laptop here were triggered with a key command, though one feature we really liked -- a quick bar to access frequently-used media -- was pulled up just by looking beyond the left side of the screen. It also worked very well and never came up when we didn't want it to. The level of precision was further verified with a simple game they've created where you blow up asteroids before they impact Earth just by looking at them; the smallest rocks were only a few pixels wide, and we could consistently blast 'em.

Tobii is smart enough to realize that their technology isn’t meant to replace the keyboard or the mouse, rather it can serve as a complimentary way of controlling a device. There is still a long way to go. But it is worthwhile to wait for maturer laptop employing this technology.
