Don Stenberg (R-NEB) Enters U.S. Senate Race Against Ben Nelson

LINCOLN – Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg announced today that he will be a candidate for the 2012 U.S. Senate seat currently held by Ben Nelson.

Stenberg, who was the Republican nominee against Nelson in 2000, said Nelson has assisted President Obama in taking the country in the wrong direction.

“Under President Obama, assisted by Senator Ben Nelson, our nation is going in the wrong direction.  It is the direction of vast budget deficits and heavy-handed federal government regulation.
Senator Nelson's votes for the almost $800 billion failed stimulus, for earmarks, and for federal health insurance mandates are propelling our nation in the wrong direction,” Stenberg said.

Stenberg also said that Nebraska's next United States Senator needs to be a genuine, lifelong conservative -- not a wheeler dealer, or a person whose core principles change from day to day or from year to year.

“Senator Nelson is a wheeler dealer.  When he was our Governor, his wheeling and dealing with the low-level nuclear waste site cost Nebraska taxpayers $140 million.”

“His wheeling and dealing to support the federal takeover of health care in exchange for the Cornhusker Kickback embarrassed our state and imposed a massive new federal mandate on all Americans.

“Wheeler dealers like earmarks.  Ben Nelson likes them a lot.  But they are fundamentally wrong.  They lead to scandals, as Senators seek earmarks for their friends and cronies.  They are used to buy votes for bad legislation and grease the skids for vast deficit spending.  As Nebraska's next United States Senator I will not seek any earmarks and will oppose all earmarks sought by others.”
