March 5, 2012 - PRLog -- Nebraska State Treasurer and U.S. Senate candidate, Don Stenberg, said today that unless Washington stops the growth in spending, the nation risks economic ruin.

“The explosive growth in federal spending threatens our country’s future and much of what makes America special.  If we do not stop it soon, we run the risk of an economic crisis that could result in massive unemployment and out-of-control inflation,” Stenberg said.

At a news conference at his campaign headquarters in downtown Lincoln Monday morning, Stenberg kicked off a three-day, 7-city statewide tour to unveil his plan to cut federal spending.

“The trillion dollars deficits we’ve run year after year also threaten the ability of the federal government to maintain critical programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Despite this serious threat to our nation's future, the Democrat-controlled United States Senate has not even passed a budget in over 3 years,” he said.

“We cannot continue with a Congress that recklessly and irresponsibly fails to adopt a budget, wastes hard-earned tax dollars on federal boondoggles, and creates an ever-growing debt for our children and grandchildren to pay,” Stenberg said.

“To cut wasteful federal spending and balance the federal budget, we need bold leadership.  We need to send a proven budget cutter to Washington.  I have that proven record.”
“As Nebraska State Treasurer, I cut my budget by 13%.  As Nebraska's Attorney General, I operated that office on the third smallest budget in the United States,” he said.

“The plan I am proposing today will put in place spending restraints, eliminate special privileges for members of Congress and federal workers, eliminate failed departments and programs, reduce the cost of federal operations, and preserve Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for future generations,” Stenberg said.

“To effectively cut federal spending we need a United States Senator with a proven record of fiscal responsibility.  I have that record.  Jon Bruning, on the other hand, has increased his Attorney General's office budget faster than the rate of increase in the federal budget during his nine years in office.  To cut the federal budget, we will need a United States Senator who is a doer, not a talker,” Stenberg said.
