| Olympic qualifier to be played in CoventryCoventry will play host to a qualifying game for the men’s Olympic football tournament in April 2012 – ahead of staging 12 matches during London 2012 later that year.
The test event will be staged at the Ricoh Arena, which will be temporarily renamed the City of Coventry Stadium during London 2012 when the venue is set to host a total of 12 matches for the men’s and women’s Olympic football tournaments. LOCOG’s testing programme will focus primarily on testing the field of play, results, scoring and timing systems, as well as key operational procedures and functions. Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, said the decision showed the high esteem the venue was held within LOCOG. “The test events are a key component of the preparations to the world’s greatest sporting event,” he said. “We are one of only three stadiums which will be hosting a medal match when we stage the women’s bronze medal game during 2012. “This test event will make sure that the operational aspect of running such prestigious matches goes smoothly on the big days themselves.” The exact date of the fixture is still to be confirmed and people who are interested in attending the qualifying match, or any of the fixtures which will be held at the venue during 2012, should sign up to www.tickets.london2012.com and they will be sent further information as soon as it is available. Councillor Mal Mutton, Chair Scrutiny Board 2, who holds responsibility for London 2012, said: “The news that Coventry is also to host a men's Olympic football qualifier next April is more great news for the city. “Today's announcement by LOCOG as part of their sports testing programme, provides an excellent opportunity to prove that the City of Coventry Stadium is the perfect venue to act as a host for such a world famous tournament. “The hosting of another match, in addition to those already announced, all adds to the pre-event build up and excitement for what will be a wonderful experience for everyone involved.” ENDS Media enquiries: Simon Gilbert Advent Communications 2 Edison Building Electric Wharf Sandy Lane Coventry CV1 4JA Tel: 024 7663 3636 http://www.advent- # # # Advent Communications is a well-established public relations consultancy based in Coventry.
