‘Ryan a Ronnie’ on their way to Swansea's Brangwyn Hall

Feb. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- As part of St David’s Week in Swansea the public are invited to enjoy a free screening of Meic Povey's affectionate but frank BAFTA Cymru award winning film ‘Ryan a Ronnie’ at the Brangwyn Hall on Wednesday 2 March.

Emerging in the late 1960s, when double acts were all the rage, Ryan Davies and Ronnie Williams achieved great success on Welsh language TV.  Their big break happened with three network series on BBC One across the UK between 1971 and 1973.  Over a period of seven years they developed a devoted audience in Wales and increasingly throughout the UK.

The production goes backstage to explore the forces that kept the hard-working Ryan and Ronnie together for seven spectacular years but eventually drove them apart.  The film highlights their separate ideas and the tensions between them, task-master Ryan reportedly saying "we're not here to have fun ... comedy is a serious business!”

In this bitter sweet story of Wales's favourite comedy double act we see how success brings its own pressures and the pair split up one fateful night at the Double Diamond in Caerphilly in 1974.  Ronnie the straight man is happy to stay in Wales as a big fish while Ryan the talented comedian craves the bigger picture, ending up in the U.S.A.

The Welsh Language screenings with English subtitles start at 1pm and 7pm.  The screenings are free but are ticketed.  Tickets are available for collection from Swansea Tourist Information Centre (01792 637300) and online.
