A scientist working at the University of Washington has developed a contact lens capable of measuring the blood sugar of the wearer. Dubbed a ‘smart contact lens’, the vision correction aid has been specifically created for those living with diabetes.

Unlike traditional contact lenses, the smart lens is fully loaded with extra technology including tiny LEDs and a microelectronic chip. The two work together to determine the amount of glucose present in a tear, and send the results to a wireless read out device that can be easily stored in a trouser pocket or coat pocket. This information makes it easier for diabetes sufferers to control their condition and as it is built into contact lenses, makes the technology easily transportable and useable at any time, in any location.
