Top five permit tips to help you open your restaurant in Los Angeles

Feb. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- To open up a restaurant in Los Angeles, you need to be aware that there are many different agencies, sign-off's, requirements and inspectors involved.  

1) Be kind, courteous and helpful during the permit process because the people that approve your restaurant could be your first customers.

2)  If you are remodeling the place, get your Building Permits from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety but get your Health permit from the Los Angeles county public works.

3) If you are going to serve alcohol, you need to get two (2) permits.  A liquor license from the State of California Alcohol and Beverage Control (ABC) and a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) from the City of Los Angeles.   They are separate approvals from your building permit or your health permit.  

4)  If you are dealing with grease, you'll need to make sure the owner installed a grease trap interceptor.  If not, one will have to be put in.  Check your lease to make sure that it is clear who pays for the grease trap.

5) Remember that the City and County of Los Angeles have experienced huge staff reductions and limited hours due to the City budget crisis.  Make sure you allow for additional processing time for your applications, allow for scheduling delays for appointments and allow for limited hours for staff.
