Jan. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Adelphi University is pleased to host investigative journalist Kim Barker, who will present her lecture “The Taliban Shuffle: A Look at What the US Has Done in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Why It’s Not Working.” The event will take place on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 12 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center’s Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

Ms. Barker began covering South Asia after September 11, 2001, and spent two years on a project called “Struggle for the Soul of Islam," which sent her to Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia. From 2004 to 2009, she was the South Asia bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune. Most of her time was spent in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As one of the longest serving foreign correspondents in the region, she covered major stories such as the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the fall of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, and the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

After leaving the Tribune in 2009, Ms. Barker won the Edward R. Murrow Press fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, where she studied, wrote and lectured on Pakistan, Afghanistan, and U.S. policy. Her book, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a dark but humorous take on the war on terror, was released in March 2010. Since June 2010, she has served as a staff writer at ProPublica, a nonprofit online investigative newsroom that partners with mainstream news organizations to run stories.
