By: peterlin * It’s the first ever smartphone to have crossed the electrified high walls of Apple. * It’s the first ever smartphone to have an antenna running along the edges. * It’s the first ever smartphone that’s just 9.3mm thick. The Design: The first thing that’s sure to catch your attention is the build of the Apple iPhone 4. It’s so unlike the previous iPhones, so unlike Apple, so to speak. The handset is much thinner than any smartphone we’ve seen so far and Apple even claims that it’s the slimmest smartphone on earth. The curved back design that we’ve seen in Apple’s older iPhones has been done for. In its place is a rectangular design with an all-glass front that’s bound to be liked more by many. But the highlight of the design is the antenna, which according to Jobs has never been done before. The metallic band that runs along the phone’s side acts as the antenna that can improve 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GSM signals. Now this is something we’ve never seen before. But the same thing is also said to be posing a lot of signal reception problems for left-handers. But that’s a whole new story. The Apple iPhone 4 is available is black and white versions – the elusive white version is not available at the time of writing. The handset also houses some really clicky side buttons and a sturdy home button. The Apple iPhone 4 is a downright winner when it comes to design. The Display: The iPhone 4 boasts a ‘retina display’ the resolution of which is four times that of Apple’s previous models. Now this display, we have to say is superb. The display does defeat the human eye – its extremely difficult to discern individual pixels. Bravo Apple, for that scintillating display! The Camera: Apple has included a 5MP camera with built-in LED flash and 5x digital zoom to the iPhone 4. If this camera can take great pictures, the illumination sensor at the back lets the it take smooth pictures even in poor lighting conditions. There also is a VGA front-facing camera, for you to play around with your self-portraits. Wait, this camera also serves another purpose: video calling. FaceTime is this new feature that lets you say hi to your loved ones in a jiffy. But of course, one the other end, there has to be an iPhone 4 for FaceTime to work! The processor, OS, gyroscope and accelerometer: Built into the handset is Apple’s ingenious A4 processor that can take on complex tasks without exerting pressure on the battery. Then there is the built-in three-axis gyroscope and accelerometer that give the iPhone 4 some advanced motion sensing capabilities. The iPhone 4 ships with Apple’s iOS 4 – this operating system functions as the smartphone’s right hand, making it capable of a lot of magic. iBooks, iAd and iMovie: Moving on to the more interesting aspects of the iPhone 4, namely iBooks, iAd and iMovie. Make your own movie with the iMovie application and read all you want with Apple’s improved version of iBooks. The iAd advertising platform is the most interesting of all, using which developers can make money through advertisements apart from direct sales to users. What else? The iPhone is available with 16GB or 32GB options, supports 3.5G and comes with a 7.2Mps download speed and 5.8Mbps upload speed. The smartphone lets you multitask, control calls and songs with your voice, optimise the homescreen according to your mood and what not. And at the end of the day, when you’re done looking through every nook and cranny of this device, you’re bound to walk back home wondering if you’ve come across the best smartphone of all time.
