Nov. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- One lasting sports image from this year was Graeme McDowell’s embrace of his father, Ken, after winning the United States Open on Father’s Day. McDowell, 31, was the first player from Northern Ireland to win the tournament and its first European winner since Tony Jacklin in 1970. McDowell will be a member of Europe’s team for the Ryder Cup next week.(Taylormade R9 Max Irons) He spoke about his game at a recent appearance in Manhattan for Callaway Golf.

Q.
Does your mother expect you to win on Mother’s Day next year?

A.
Obviously, we dream of winning major championships as professional golfers, but to do it on Father’s Day at Pebble Beach, one of the world’s most iconic golf courses, with my dad there was a special moment. As we were walking to the first tee on Sunday, I wished him happy Father’s Day and said: “I wasn’t able to get you a present. What do you want?” And he said, “The U.S. Open trophy will do me just fine.”(Taylormade R9 Forged Irons) I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to deliver, but it was a very emotional moment to win it there with him walking the course with me.

My mom was on the beach in Spain with her sister that week having a vacation. It was just a long way for her to come to the West Coast. She doesn’t really walk 18 holes anymore. She suffers from MS so her energy level is quite low these days.

Q.
What was the change in your game that elevated you to win the Open?

A.
I’ve been working hard with my coach, Pete Cowen, and just my short game, mainly. I feel like I had the long game to win on a U.S. Open-style course, but my short game just had to keep getting better and better. The stuff I’ve been working on in my technique for my short game has a lot of correlation to my long game. As my short game improved, as has my full swing. (TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Iron Set)And that’s why I arrived there with a good enough game to do it at Pebble.

Q.
What did you do to get over any final-round jitters at the Open?

A.
Saturday was a big day for me. I was leading by two and it was a late tee time. I was a bit nervous. And I hung tough that day. I didn’t play my best, but I dug deep and sort of let my short game get me around. By the time I got to Sunday, I kind of let Dustin [Johnson] take the nerves. I felt a lot better and a lot more under control. As far as having Tiger, (TaylorMade R9 Super Tri Driver )Ernie and Phil a group or two in front of me, I decided not to pay too much attention to leader boards. Just take care of my own game and see where that left me. So I felt bizarrely under control that day.
