| Community Showcase Floats For Swansea Christmas ParadeSwansea community groups will be showing off their designs at this year's Christmas Parade
By: City and County of Swansea Having been provided with the barebones of a float, five Community groups were tasked with designing and producing their own Christmas display, with the support of the City and County of Swansea’s Community Buildings Team. Each float is based around a Pantomime theme including Hansel and Gretel (Swansea Community Centres), Snow White (Gendros Community Centre), Cinderella (Penlan Children’s Centre), Peter Pan (Doodles, Sketty Park) and Aladdin (Rural Youth Project). Sue Reed, Community Recreation Development Manager, said, “This year we have been fully involved with the community groups and have given them lots of support in creating their floats. Over the last few weeks we have held numerous costume making and scenery painting workshops in Gendros Community Centre which have proved very popular.” “The groups involved have really come together and invested so much time in decorating their floats. Each group is now in the final stages and are just putting the finishing touches to their designs. Everyone is very excited and really looking forward to showing off their hard work in the parade.” The Community groups will be joined in the procession by the Christmas Elves (Bonymaen Kids Play Initiative) riding in the Bay Rider land train along with the Bumbles of Mumbles float and the City and County of Swansea’s own Waterfront Winterland float. In total seven floats will make up the body of the procession accompanied by marching bands, dance groups and festive street entertainers including Samba Tawe, the ATC marching band, Interplay (with a lantern display), Habibi Dancers, Dixie Land Jazz Band, the Welsh Bockers and Father Christmas himself. The Lord Major and Lady Mayoress will also be making an appearance along with the stars from this year’s Grand Theatre pantomime and Real Radio presenters Jagger and Woody. Prior to the parade a variety of street entertainers will be in the city centre and Waterfront Winterland to entertain all the excited children waiting for Santa to arrive. Waterfront Winterland returns to the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum from 19 November until 9 January with the Admiral and Road Safety real ice skating rinks, the Miles Hire Giant Wheel, Santa’s Grotto, family funfair and lots more. The Swansea Christmas Parade and lights switch on takes place on Sunday 21 November at 5.00pm. The procession will start from outside the Dylan Thomas Centre at 5.00pm and make its way to the Guildhall via Wind Street, Castle Bailey Street, College Street, The Kingsway, St Helen’s Road and St Helen’s Crescent finishing at approximately 6.30pm. Spectators are encouraged to line the parade route and cheer on the parade as it moves along the route.
