Nov. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Whether it be the controversy surrounding the Canadian Armed Forces, the emotional impact it has on families who have spouses or children overseas, or the intrigue and curiosity had over this chosen profession, Peter A. Brandt’s latest memoir, Canuck GI: The Peculiar Life of a Canadian Soldier encompasses what it means to be a Canadian soldier as a whole.

The memoir, which launched this past June, has been rapidly selling to army veterans, the families and friends of those currently in the Canadian Armed Forces, and readers who want to know more about what it’s like to be a part of such an adventurous career.  Perhaps to do with the news of the ongoing war in Afghanistan, but Brandt’s memoir digs deeper than the mechanics of the lifestyle.

“It’s a literal snapshot of what it’s like as a soldier,” says Brandt.  “It’s a wonderful ‘people’ story, about the camaraderie among fellow soldiers and stories about those I worked with—I focused on the journey, not specifically on the particular circumstances of the times.”

A career that has no equal in the civilian world, Brandt’s memoir tells the story of a boy whose rosy picture of life in the military turned out to be nowhere in sight—from UN duty in Cyprus to trips around the world, from home sickness to the ability to do things he couldn’t have dreamed of doing in his earlier life, Canuck GI encompasses what it really means to be a Canadian Soldier.

Brandt reminisces not just through his words, but through photos taken during his career.  The vivid descriptions of where he traveled, such as France and Iceland, and a look at the Canadian WWII War Memorial buried in the mountains of Sicily, are complimented by a series of photographs, connecting readers to a way of life that may otherwise be misunderstood.

Brandt is thankful for the experience, and showcases the positive impact it has had on his writing career, showing other “would be” writers that it is possible.

“I used to say it was just a job, but I know now that I was lying to myself—it was a way of life, a career.  I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my experiences, and I genuinely like who I am.”
