July 11, 2010 - PRLog -- TORONTO, Ontario – The Canadian Armed Forces’ latest slogan, Fight With The Canadian Forces has become known for its aggressive nature, and is a long way from the obscure There’s No Life Like It slogan of yesterday.  Over the years, there has been controversy over the approach taken to boost recruitment numbers; however, it is important to depict the nature of what it means to be a Canadian soldier as a whole.

Such is the case with Peter A. Brandt’s latest book, Canuck GI: The Peculiar Life of a Canadian Soldier.  Whether you are thinking of joining the Canadian Armed Forces, know someone who is, or are just curious to know what the experience would be like, Brandt’s memoir gives a deeper look into what can be a hard-hitting, adventurous career.

In 1996, Brandt retired after 20 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and as he reminisced about the time he spent in the employment of the Canadian Government, he humorously wondered, “What the hell was THAT about?”  With that backdrop, he began writing his memoir.

A career that has no equal in the civilian world, Brandt’s memoir tells the story of a boy whose rosy picture of life in the military turned out to be nowhere in sight—from UN duty in Cyprus to trips around the world, from home sickness to the ability to do things he couldn’t have dreamed of doing in his earlier life, Canuck GI encompasses what it really means to be a Canadian Soldier.

“There is nothing in this world that could have prepared me for the peculiar way of life the military turned out to be.  Parts of it were downright scary, while others were exhilarating.  In the end, it came down to the people—the camaraderie among fellow soldiers that made it great,” says Brandt.

“I used to say it was just a job, but I know now that I was lying to myself—it was a way of life, a career.  I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my experiences, and I genuinely like who I am.”
