According to data produced at the prestigious Global Congress of Maternal and Infant Health in Barcelona, Spain, Dr Kishore Kumar of `The Cradle' proved how a newborn screening method adopted at the hospital saved 120 precious lives. These 120 babies would have been born with serious metabolic disorders had they not been screened at an early stage.

The hospital was also able to save six babies with mental retardation secondary to congenital hypothyroidism had the hospital not screened the babies at birth for these medical shortcomings.

"It is unethical and illegal to turn a blind eye to the problems being faced by Indian babies __ by the International Community on the welfare of maternal and infant child health," Kumar said.

The Congress focused on reducing maternal and infant mortality in the world and is in line with MDG (Millennium Development Goal) conference that was attended by all the World Leaders in WHO headquarters, New York, including President Obama and Iranian President.

In the second lecture, Kumar spoke on PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborn) which is one of the leading killers among healthy newborn babies all over the world.
