| ![]() My Heart Is Filled Up.The J.C. Coleman foundation is an After-School Dropout Prevention Program that caters to the at risk youth in the Savannah GA, schools.
By: Chaletha Hernandez One experience I would like to share is when we enrolled a student named Johnira Holmes into the program. Johnira is a 10 year old young lady who was born with a spinal disease, and she is bound to a wheelchair. She is very verbal and ambitious when it comes to learning. When Johnira first came into the program, the team and I were a little reluctant with allowing her to participate in our sports and recreation activities. But, because she wanted to be a part of the group and join in the game of kickball, I took her out of her chair, and stood her up. When they rolled the ball to her she kicked the ball so far that everyone was shocked. After she kicked the ball, she yelled, “Yeah. That’s it.!” She turned around looked at me and said, “Now you know I can’t run, so start running Ms. Chale.” I thought that was the most hilarious and heartwarming thing I had ever seen in my years working with the after school program as well as working with individuals who have disabilities. Johnira is a joy to be around, and I’m glad that her father trusts us enough to send her to the program three times a week. In conclusion, these last 16 months of working with the J.C. Coleman foundation has been an experience I will never forget. It is designed to meet the needs of our youth of all ages and of all sizes. It has enriching activities that helps the youth and the community become one family. I believe that everyone teaches and everyone learns, and this is a prime example. . # # # About The mission of The J.C.
