What We are Doing for Women’s History Month

The month of March was filled with four themes, but of all the themes Women’s History Month was my top priority. In honor of Women’s History Month, we came up with many activities to help our kids have a better understanding of what it means.

March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Women’s History month all began in 1981 when the new National Women's History Project in Northern California, among other groups, successfully lobbied Congress to declare a national Women's History Week in the days around March 8th. By 1987, by presidential decree, the week became a month.  This gives us more time to celebrate the women who have made a major impact on our history.

We set aside the 21st - 31st of March for the activities we planned. The activities stretch from current event to arts and crafts. The activities are as follows:

Monday, the 21st, I planned current events. The activity was to find current events dealing with Women’s History month or about a women with importance in the public eye in this day of age.

Tuesday is our movie days, so we presented “Akeelah and the Bee” the first week and “Ice Princess” for the second week. We presented “Akeelah and the Bee” because it’s about a girl who overcomes all odds to win a national spelling bee. We presented “Ice Princess” because it’s about working towards her dreams no matter what the costs. These two movies are what Women’s History Month is all about. It’s about women overcoming all odds and making history.

Wednesday is our arts and crafts days, so we planned for them to do a collage. The collage is made out of pictures of all the women they look up to. They are able to use magazines to cut out of or bring in photos of people in their family. It will take two days to complete.

Thursday is for literary arts day so we planned for them to read stories and poems by famous female authors. We had the kids write a summary about what they thought the poem or stories meant. Once everyone finishes, we go over them as a group.

Friday is gym day for the kids, so they were able to enjoy some free time after all the hard work they have been doing.

As you can see, we tried to incorporate all types of ideas and projects to help the children get a “round about” feeling of what Women’s History Month is about. They can fully realize what our ancestors went through for us to have the rights we have today.
